A snap shot of Augathella

Well we did take a rest day here at Augathella and while the town is small there are still one or two points of interest that caught our eye while walking around. I have decided that I will endeavour to get a photo of the official town name signs for all the towns we visit from now on (I should have done this from the start!).

If you look closely at the emu you can see someone has previously knocked the head off and someone has put it back on!
Murals are popular in the town and there are 3 within a short distance of each other

This one is opposite the pub

This is on some general store and apparently it is about some movie called Smilie that was based on a character in Augathella - not being Australian I have no idea about the movie!

and off course what town would be complete if they didn't paint their toilet block!
Also the towns main street is split in 2 and divided by little islands and they have small flower beds and these wire art works.

The pub was a popular place and it wasn't even lunchtime!

And even something that coming from the city I thought was bizarre and that was the police lockup!

It must get hot up here so the jail is just 3 walls and mesh to allow air to circulate!
Augathella has bore water from the Great Artesian Bore and has to drill holes to supply the town with bore water which is really soft and hot water when you have a shower.

this is the water tower and below is one of the drills (we think)

or maybe this is the drill part! we weren't quite sure which one was the actual drill but they were all making a noise!

Neil has just discovered some serious stress fractures on his back wheel and we are still trying to decide what to do with this somewhat big problem!

  1. Hi guys from the Robbos. Sounds like you are having a great time. Sorry we have missed your skypes lately. Just not around when you were. Russell had a nice day for his birthday. Went out for tea which is why we missed your last call. Keep having a great time in the warm weather. Freezing here! Cheers Leanne.

  2. there were 2 Smiley movies, "Smiley" and "Smiley Gets a Gun". They date back to the 50's or 60's and aren't very good. But they do depict country life at those times. Smiley was a naughty little red haired boy who got into all sorts of mischief, he had a pet kangaroo.... one movie he is helping fight bushfires that his friend started, and the other one, he has to do good deeds to earn himself a gun from the local police sergeant. I dont know if you have heard of Chips Rafferty? But he was the "big" Australian movie star they used.
