Myrtleford to Beechworth
Myrtleford - Beechworth = 33km (via rail trail to Taylors Gap and then onto C524/Bucklands Gap road)
Cummulative total = 862km
It was a lovely short day today but not without its' hills! I knew that we would have some sort of hill to Beechworth as it is 523m above sea level so a hill was inevitable. We took the rail trail to Taylors Gap which is a nice gentle climb to the top of a small range and since we were on the trail the gradient was good. Once we were at the part of the trail where it crosses B500 we got on the road and went down a bit to meet C524 and then it was a gentle hill going down and as we got closer to the range we started to climb again, gradual at the start and then probably the last 2km was very steep again but at least this time we didn't have to get off and walk!
We got to Beechworth pretty early (around lunchtime) and it is a very pretty town, very trendy and full of boutique type shops, eating places and old buildings. In the middle of the town center it has a main roundabout with a section of old cobblestones (I am assuming they are old!) at each street that intersects with the roundabout and I was very hesitant in going over with them as between some of the cobblestones were some very deep gaps and I could just see the wheel getting stuck in one of them.
It has a IGA so we picked up our dinner for tonight as the campground (Silver Creek) is at least 2.5km from town. Since it is Melbourne Cup day and everyone has gone home we think it is just the 3 off us in the park! it is in a bush setting and it is so quiet here (would hate to have been here over the long weekend!) and it is suppose to have 4 resident Koalas! we have seen a mother one with a very young koala clinging to her, so we are hoping that she waunders around on the ground as at the moment she is high up in the tree and the camera is not that good for those sorts of telescopic shots.
We are having chicken stirfry in a soup tonight! Neil is cooking and picked up some veges and 2 min noodles and will use some taco seasoning as flavouring!!! should be interesting!
We are not having to carry to much food at the moment just the basics but we sometimes wonder if we carry alot of food - we have the following:
1 box of weetbix, packet of dates, packet of dried fruit medley, crackers, bread, margarine, jam, nutella, milk powder, earl grey tea bags, coffee, small block of cheese, usually some sort of sweet item, sometimes yoghurt and fruit and then we pick up our dinner as we pass through before setting up camp. I think we eat pretty well and we think we are loosing weight! it is hard to tell, I think we are more toning up!
Tomorrow we pick up the railtrail again and head back down the hill and then onto Wangaratta where we will spend a few days there ... eating home baking hopefully!!! Neil is looking very scruffy at the moment and since we are meeting his folks tomorrow he is going to shave his beard off so he doesn't look like such a vagabond!
